    A. Bates

language (Auline Bates, Dec. 5, 2012)
It is 1968. Best friends, Ronnie and Sarah are twelve years old. It is their last summer. Junior High will start in the fall, but for now the girls are free to climb trees, ride bikes and sneak out of the house for midnight adventures. The Viet Nam war is at first a distant background to their summer, but Ronnie’s brother could be drafted to fight in Viet Nam if he can’t get into college. Her older sister’s new friends might have new and interesting ideas, but they are not quite as innocent as they seem, and the anti-war protests grow more violent all over the country. Suddenly being grounded or checking on the pollywogs doesn’t seem so important to Ronnie. When the issues of the day begin to intrude on the girls’ idyllic summer, they will explode in a tragedy their families will never forget.

Or else they’re adding up to something really bad. Merchandise is missing, a fellow employee is coming on too strong, and it looks like Darik was two-timing her with another girl. • Better Eyesight

    Bates

Paperback (Delmar Learning, Jan. 1, 1981)
New, larger format -- even easier to read! -- edition of this classic self-help health title. Still includes the pull out chart. The original Bates Method book was a classic -- but in a tiny little A format and with a Victorian looking design that was hard to read -- and in much need of updating for today's market. So the new edition has an increased the page size and a clear, modern design that's easy to read and follow. The rationale behind the Bates Method is that if you wear glasses or contact lenses, chances are you don't really need to. Prescription lenses act as a prop for the eye muscles so over time the eyes actually get weaker. In the long term, glasses will only ever weaken the eyes. The Bates Method restores sight firstly with a series of exercises that relax and soothe the eye muscles -- the equivalent of massaging away tension build up -- and secondly retrains the relaxed eyes to focus effectively. The exercises are straightforward and easy to incorporate into daily life.
